What is a Guardian?
What is a Guardian ?
A Guardian is a user of the platform who has been invited by an Owner to collaborate in the management and recovery of a shared secret. Guardians are responsible for holding a portion of the secret in the form of a “seed”, which is a partial key, and they agree with other Guardians to recover the complete secret if necessary.
Here are some important things you should know about a Guardian in VaultGP:
- Owner’s invitation: the Owner decides who will be the Guardians of their secret and sends them an invitation to participate in the process.
- Storage of seeds: a Guardian stores a portion of the secret as a seed. These seeds are partial keys that, when combined with those of other Guardians, allow for the recovery of the complete secret. The minimum number of seeds required to recover the secret is determined by the Owner.
- Collaboration in recovery: Guardians have to collaborate with each other to recover the secret in specific situations, such as loss of the Owner’s passing.
- Recovery process: when Guardians want to recover a secret, they must authenticate themselves and use their private key to decrypt their seed. Then, the seeds are combined according to the established protocol to recover the complete secret.
- Security: Guardians play a crucial role in the security of VaultGP, ensuring that the secret can be recovered when necessary, but only if they follow the correct process.
In summary, a Guardian in VaultGP is a user who helps safeguard and, if necessary, recover shared secrets by managing a portion of the information needed to decrypt the complete secret. This is done in collaboration with other Guardians, and if the Owner doesn’t stop the process..
